If you travel with bikes much or just want a bike that will easily fit in the trunk of most cars, this is your bike! Fits in a standard size luggage so no extra bike fees when you travel (as much as $75 in extra each way for a standard bike!) I flew a dozen times with this bike and loved how easy it was to travel with and put back together. I'm including the soft side suitcase and padding plus the frame lock and frame pump in the deal!

This is a 2002 Dahon Speed Pro with drop road bars (the original came with straight mountain bars.)

- Frame and stem fold down into compact unit. 20" wheels allow it to fit in car trunks without taking off the wheels and will fit in standard luggage.
- Very adaptable! Will fit riders in the 5'-6'3" range
- 7 speed with good range for hills geared for smaller wheels
- Shimano Sora integrated shifters/brake levers
- Aero/low spoke Rolf from wheel with suspension hub
- Suitcase and padding included
- Frame pump included
- Integrated frame lock included
- Pictures here: http://austin.craigslist.org/bik/3156206633.html

This sold for $750 new without the suitcase, lock, pump, and water bottle carrier. Asking $275.

Contact me at info /at/ violetcrowncycles.com if interested.

#4 Re: Equipment (Discussion, For sale) » Frame Painting in Austin... or? » 2012-07-22 15:30:59

I'll second Crosslink. I use them for all my custom frames at Violet Crown Cycles (http://violetcrowncycles.com). I had a little trouble with the finish early on (About 3 years ago), but they always re-shot the frame to fix it at no charge. Since that time, they worked out the kinks and I've been very happy with their work. As other positives, the price is far lower than wet paint, more durable, and better for the environment. Unless you need 2 tone or pictorial designs on your frame, there really isn't a reason not to go powder coat these days.

#5 Re: Commuting/Routes » Getting kids to bike to school » 2011-11-15 18:41:25

Michael,
My children's school, St. Elmo Elementary, is on the Safe Routes to School program this year. At our campus, the current focus is getting regularly walking. The bike push will be coming later in the year. Maybe that is what is happening at Kealing?

I do not fault the staff. This year they have 4 people, but they are responsible for the entire city (I believe 5-6 campuses city-wide.) I think the larger problem is lack of resources, not too many. The Safe Routes to School program should be done at every campus, every year. Would that be expensive? Yes, but cheaper in the long run than just one highway fly-over which we would not need if we made the city truly bikeable/walkable (not to mention the 100s of millions saved in health care costs.)

I wrote more about this here including the strange absence of involving drivers in making routes to school safer: http://austinontwowheels.org/2011/09/16 … -the-bull/

#6 Re: Rides and Events » Where's the list of the Social Rides? » 2011-10-28 06:32:41

Michael,

I try to post all of them on my Google events calendar: http://austinontwowheels.org/cycling-events-calendar/. This includes all the social rides I am contacted about or hear about, not just Social Cycling Austin.

Social Cycling Austin now has 3-4 weekly rides in addition to the Thursday Night Social Ride. They vary from ladies only to yoga to a beginner friendly ride. Not all are weekly so I recommend you join their Facebook page to make sure you learn about them.

This spring, Austin on Two Wheels hosted a series of guided social rides in and around downtown. We had Dutch bikes available for rental during the rides and had other commuter/transportation accessories available as well. The series ended in April and now we have the rental bikes on sale for 40% or more off. We also have brand new, never opened or used pannier bags, locks, child seats and front baskets on sale for 50% off.

More on what's for sale here: http://livingontwowheels.org/bikesale.html

I'm offering free home delivery on the bikes to homes in the City of Austin and also have shipping available if you know someone outside of Austin that is interested in picking up a Dutch bike.

#9 Re: Helmet Laws/Other legislation » Who do we want on the City Council? » 2011-04-30 08:20:26

Augenwinkel,
The Master Bicycle Plan has the force of an ordinance. It's not just general policy guidelines. This issue came up with the Nueces Bicycle Boulevard which is specifically mentioned in the Plan. I'm not sure what legal tap dancing the staff came up with to abandon Nueces, but anytime something is mentioned in the Plan, it is meant to equivalent to an ordinance.

#10 Re: Helmet Laws/Other legislation » Who do we want on the City Council? » 2011-04-29 19:39:59

Michael,
The Council meeting in question was the one where they passed the Master Bike Plan, June 11, 2009.

I'm leaning towards voting for Tovo in Place 3, but I just saw her TV commercial where she attacks the City Council for raising parking fees downtown. I'm sorry, but I don't want another politician defending the ridiculous subsidies we give car drivers. (Plus she complains about water fees going up while being an opponent of WTP 4. You are either for putting real market costs on water to drive conservation or for building more capacity. Being against both isdisingenuous.)

#11 Re: Justice Issues / Collisions » Cyclist killed on Easter Sunday » 2011-04-26 17:34:44

His name was Andrew Runciman and was only 24. Was a hit and run: "A preliminary investigation shows that the victim was riding his bicycle southbound on S. Lamar Blvd when a dark colored SUV, also traveling southbound, struck his bicycle and then left the scene. The victim is reported to have been traveling in the far right lane of S. Lamar Blvd."

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-8164.

#12 Re: Helmet Laws/Other legislation » Who do we want on the City Council? » 2011-04-26 17:26:56

Michael,
I was at that meeting you are talking about it. It was really strange. The rest of the Council was being so positive, and she did this finger wagging that seemed like political posturing to me. There was no other good reason for it at the time.

Regarding the parking in bike lanes, I could be remembering this wrong, but I think the Master Bike Plan calls for parking bans in all bike lanes by 2020. Bike/Ped have been implementing this neighborhood by neighborhood with improvements (my neighborhood got the Exposition Road treatment this winter -- now there is no parking in any bike lanes.)

Whoa, Stu, I'm not seeing hostility in this thread, just a disagreement on your suggested course of action. Forums like this should be a dialogue, and if you throw something controversial out there, you should expect a spirited debate.

#21 Re: Bike Lanes / Facilities » BOYCOTT Thurs. 6/24 Downtown Bicycle Blvd Meeting » 2010-06-24 08:53:25

I can honestly say this is the lamest idea I've ever heard. Imagine the NAACP, "We don't like how politicians are ignoring us on segregation. We'll show them by not doing anything about it." I've been pretty disappointed with the cycling community's ability to take this on and think more than 1 step ahead, but doing nothing gets you absolutely nothing.

#24 Re: Other » Re-Building a Bike after Car Accident » 2010-05-14 09:25:43

If you want your frame repaired, DO NOT have your friend do it unless he/she is a frame builder. Not only does the person repairing the bike need experience in understanding the loads on the frame and if the repair can make it safe to ride, a frame builder will also make sure the frame is back in proper alignment. Someone who is a welder will probably not know how to do that and you could get left with a frame that pulls to a direction or gives you the death shimmy at high speeds.

The Surly Cross Check is a steel frame so it is possible that it is repairable (for the curious reading this, in general aluminum and carbon frames are not repairable after crashes and should be replaced.) I am a frame builder, but I don't really do repairs. I'd recommend Jame Flatman at Alchemy Bicycles: http://alchemybicycles.com/contact. He's an excellent frame builder, and the person I refer repair inquiries to. Take your frame to him, and he'll tell you if it's repairable and how much it will cost. Then you can determine if you want to repair or replace.

RIDE PACE:These are social rides so we will be riding at a pleasant social pace and no one will be dropped. Our ride guides will be wearing identifiable shirts and will keep the group together and make sure no one is left behind. This ride is about the simple pleasure of riding with friends, not competition or workouts. If you want to race or get in a workout, we'd suggest you do that before the ride.

About the ride series
These rides are part of the test for a new concept bike store in Austin dedicated to the simple pleasure of riding with friends, not competition or workouts. In addition to these unique rides, we will have some great Dutch bikes and cargo bikes to test ride while you're there. We'll be giving away some gift certificates from cool local business to participants who help us with feedback on this project plus everyone who gives us feedback will be entered into a drawing for an Electra Amsterdam Royal 8 at the end of the series. All rides will leave from our ride host BoConcept, 430 W 2nd St.
