The Basics

Early history of the site

  • 1995: AOL. Started life on an AOL account.  (For verifying the year: My memory is pretty good for things like this, and the first capture in the Wayback Machine of the Updates page has an entry on 1/6/2000 that says the site started in 1995.)
  • 1997: KO.OP Radio.  I hosted “The Bicycle Lane” radio show in July and soon took over as KO.OP’s webmaster. At some point in 1996 or 1997 I moved the bicycle site to KO.OP’s server at koop.org/bikelane.  Here’s the first capture in the Wayback Machine (from 7/9/97, where the site itself says last update 4/12/97).  While the site says that the address is pobox.com/bluejay, that url is just a redirect to KO.OP.  As an aside, the first Wayback Machine capture of program guide (show schedule) is dated “Summer/Fall ’96” and I created the graphic.
  • 1998: CCSI and MichaelBluejay.com. I moved the site to a (now-defunct) webhost, at www.ccsi.com/~bluejay/bicycle, and then pretty soon moved it to michaelbluejay.com/bicycle. The first Wayback capture at CCSI is 12/6/98 but the capture date is for the frameset, and the content frame page had already moved to michaelbluejay.com.
  • 1999: MichaelBluejay.com.  Here’s the first wayback capture at that domain, from 4/28/99.  Wayback had some glitches early on which were compounded by the fact that the site was framed, so although the frameset was requested on 4/28/99, content page is from later, since there’s a visitor counter on it that started an 1/1/2000.
  • 2000: BicycleAustin.com.  Moved the bicycle site to its own domain.  Got the “Best of Austin” award from the Chronicle this year.
  • 2002: BicycleAustin.info.&nbps; I was happy when dot-info became available because the site is not a company and not an organization, it’s information, so dot-info was a perfect fit.  On 12/23/02 I registered the domain and moved the content there.
