Hi! New guy here. I'm a SXSW vet since 2003 (please don't hate me too much - I try to tread lightly) and I'm considering renting a bike this year. In the past I've gone the bus route or (very sore) feet. I'd like the exercise, plus I'm not the most patient waiting on a bus. Any tips for renting, etc., would be much appreciated. Many thanks!

Since you have time, I would suggest getting involved at Yellow Bike Project to see if you can get a free bike. But if you don't have the time, you could buy a bike on craigslist, or if you have to rent, then try http://www.waterloocycles.com/ or http://bicyclesportshop.com/page.cfm?pageID=174

There are shops that rent bikes, but SXSW is a very popular time to rent them -- they might be out. Perhaps you could reserve one?
Or buy something at Wal-Mart for cheap, and donate it to a Goodwill or a homeless person when you're done? (I'll assume you're flying in, and bringing a bike with you will cost more than renting one?) Ironically, if you keep it for a week, that'll probably cost you significantly less than renting one.
The Yellow Bike Project really isn't doing their free bike program right now -- they don't have enough space.

Bicycle Sport Shop rents bikes, from basic, to high end. We can set you up. In addition, we will be providing Valet Bike Parking at SXSW this year. Sign up for our newsletter for all of the updates at www.bicyclesportshop.com
