How to support physical protection of Stassney bike lanes

Dear Bicycle Austin community,

The city is nearing the end of its public outreach process and seeking feedback on options for safety and mobility improvements on Stassney Lane. This is a chance for you as people who ride bikes to weigh in and show support for 2.2 miles of protected bike lanes on Stassney Lane, which would add a major segment to the build-out of the city’s All Ages and Abilities network.

If you favor protected bike lanes on Stassney and an all-ages-and-abilities network in general to make biking accessible and safe for people of all skill levels, please review the project website and express your support in on the survey (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FV5YFT3). Your support can be as brief or detailed as you wish. An enthusiastic and clear message to the effect of "I want protected bike lanes on Stassney!” is a fine and time-effective response. The deadline is January 19 (this SUNDAY) so please do not put this off. The survey is short and can take only a minute or two.

Did you know that the city compromised on planned protected bike lanes on Duval St., a street with Austin's greatest bike traffic, after getting strong negative feedback for this improvement through the public outreach process in 2017? Opponents of the improvements cited concerns unrelated to safety and minor such as objections to the aesthetic appearance of physical separation of a bike lane, and supporters for protected bikes lanes only provided weak feedback to back the All Ages and Abilities network. Please do not let this happen again! There was low turnout to the Stassney Lane project open house and we're concerned the City may also water down this project.

Want to do more? Would you mind personally texting/emailing at least one friend or family member by Wednesday to ask them to take the City's Stassney survey by the 1/19 deadline? Here’s that survey link again: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FV5YFT3

Thanks so much for your work and support,

Re: How to support physical protection of Stassney bike lanes

Correction: I meant to write Duval Street, not Duval Road. The planned improvements of Duval Street from San Jacinto Blvd to 53rd St. are presented in the project website: http://austintexas.gov/duvalstreet . And, the city is expected to revisit the public process for this project later this year, so please stay tuned and be ready to participate.
