Of course Effective Cyclists oppose it.  They oppose everything, sometimes seemingly for no other real reason than to be oppositional.

That's a strange ad hominem/straw man statement there.  Neither I nor John Allen are opposing "parklets." In his piece he calls for some thought toward issues of mobility, safety, and maintenance when they are installed. For the one shown in the photo from Austin you posted, I don't see an issue on any of those three points to be concerned about on any of those three points.

You call it ad hominem, I call it an assessment of a group based on observed behavior of the group members, over decades.  Could I predict, if asked beforehand, whether Effective Cyclists would oppose parklets?  Of course.  John Allen's commentary is a joke, he spews so much ink struggling to find some way to object to something that's positive and non-controversial.  And am I surprised that you would chime in and link to his editorial?  Of course not.  This is all expected behavior.
