DWI driver Zachary Davis hit & runs cyclist on S 1st, 10/6/17

Attempted hit-and-run. Props to the witness who caught the license plate and called police.

Police say Zachary Davis hit the cyclist on South 1st Street near Gibson Street in south Austin around 9:30 p.m. Friday night and kept going. Another driver who saw it happen followed the pickup truck, and called 911 to relay the license plate number. Police were able to look up the address tied to the license plate and sent an officer who was already in the area to his house.

Davis told police he drank three beers in a 30-minute time span and proceeded to fail a field sobriety test.

Meanwhile, the man on the bike was unconscious, but still breathing when officers pulled up. Austin-Travis County EMS rushed him to the hospital. He had bleeding to his brain, cuts to his scalp, multiple rib fractures and a punctured lung.

Re: DWI driver Zachary Davis hit & runs cyclist on S 1st, 10/6/17

owlman, thanks for posting this story, and the other one.  You said "attempted hit and run".  Since the driver did leave the scene, I think that's actual hit & run.  That's certainly what he's been charged with.  Maybe you meant that he didn't get away with it, since police later caught him, but he certainly did commit a hit and run.

Between this story and the other one, my ears are still ringing about that recent comment on Nextdoor.com where someone, complaining about bicyclists, said, "Why should I, or any other sensible person give a rat's butt for the opinions of serial traffic code violators?"  As usual, applies only to bicyclists.  (In response to that, I posted figures about law-breaking Austin-area drivers including 100,000 collisions per year, 12,000 hit & runs, 500 of those where someone was injured, etc.  Only one person clicked "thank" to my post.  That's in comparison to over 100 thanks I got when I asked neighbors to take their dogs to visit my 97-year-old neighbor for whom I'm guardian.)

Good point, I was thinking attempted as in he didn't get away with it. He did hit and run (all the way back to his house!), and should be charged with it.

Davis charged with 3rd degree felony intoxication assault w/ vehicle, next court date 1/27 for "APR" whatever that is.

I believe that would be "application for probation revocation"
