The City is considering a $34M plan to overhaul Guadalupe St. between MLK and 29th St., as follows:
* Replace two car lanes with bus-only lanes
* Remove on-street parking
* Add protected bike lanes to both sides (currently only on the west side, and only for part of the stretch)
* Extend sidewalks

There are, surprisingly, a few comments in support of the plan at the end of the Statesman article, though most are predictably negative, e.g.:
This is a horrible idea, besides the downtown core, the drag is the most trafficked area in town. Creating more congestion in the UT area will give people more reason to not send their kids to UT. VERY BAD IDEA.

I can't believe some people are so ignorant they believe that if you get rid of roads and narrow roads further it will cause them to take buses, bikes and carpool. The reality is, not everyone can do this, and we don't have the public transportation network needed to support it. Some people have services they perform in people's homes, or trades, and need those lanes and absolutely can't do their job on a bicycle.

Just when you think the City of Austin could not possibly come up with a more idiotic idea.

I drive to and from UT on 24th and Guadalupe four times each day and reducing the car traffic lanes from four to two is foolish and unproductive.

Yes, that's exactly what Austin needs....fewer north/south thoroughfares. Good thinking.
- - -
More attempts at Social Engineering from our City Transportation Department. This will cause tremendous gridlock around the University, not to mention the lack of access to and from UT on 24th Street.
- - -
Reduce car lanes. A window into the thinking of the morons that run Austin.
- - -
Removing a lane of traffic to create a largely unused bike lane also "does SUCH wonders for urban congestion and livability."

More vehicles are, and will, enter the South Central Texas Region. This is more Globalist Agenda 21 BS. Waste of money for a tiny bicycle pop. More unwise planning. Lack of common sense.
But you know, we're such a bicycle-friendly city.

A KXAN article says that UT's supercomputer will be tasked with finding Austin traffic solutions. The article doesn't mention bicycles at all, but the very first comment following the article slams the idea of replacing car lanes with bike & bus lanes.
