Re: Mesa bike lanes

Here's a link to Bike Austin's petition for keeping bike lanes on Mesa:

http://bikeaustin.org/mesa/

They also had a ride yesterday to support bike lanes on Mesa, but I don't have time to post everyone's events any more, and I've never been able to get the groups or their supporters to post events here very much.  (So a big thanks to Jack for starting this thread, and for posting about the public feedback meeting.)

Austin Monitor that here's what the City had to say about bike lanes on Mesa:  "While there was some support raised for the proposed parking restrictions to maintain parking-free bicycle lanes, we received strong feedback that parking is light and that having access to on-street parking on both sides of the street outweighs having a parking-free bicycle facility in this location."

Re: Mesa bike lanes

Sounds like the Transportation Department made their decision. They are widening the bike lanes to 9ft and leaving parking unrestricted.

Re: Mesa bike lanes

--Parking: Parking will remain on both sides of Mesa Drive between Far West Boulevard and Cat Mountain Drive for use by local residents. I reached this decision by analyzing the actual use of parking on-street in this section of Mesa and concluded that the residents were correct in asserting that actual use of the parking was only on rare occasions. We may retain parking without introducing significant safety risks.

Seems odd to use the fact that parking is not really needed to justify keeping the parking lane.

Re: Mesa bike lanes

Yep.  That's another feather in Austin's "bike-friendly" cap, huh?

Re: Mesa bike lanes

Since "we need very little parking" is apparently an argument for two parking lanes rather than one, I have to wonder what level of parking needed would have been needed to be an argument for only one parking lane?
