CapMetro unveils new bike shelters

A few months ago I started getting a free newspaper in the mail called "Community Impact (Central Austin Edition)".  It has a wealth of info about local issues.  They say they started in 2005 but I'd never seen it before.

Anyway, they just ran an article on CapMetro's six new bike shelters, near MetroRail and MetroRapid stops.  CapMetro is trying to get cyclists to leave their bikes at the station rather than take them on the train, since one bike displaces 4 would-be passengers.  Access to the station costs $30/year (access by key card).  Each shelter fits 24 bikes.

When I first heard about the pilot program for this I thought of it as a nice, but unnecessary, amenity.  The last few train rides, however, have made me rethink this as quite often all of the bike hangers in the train are taken.  I'm also thinking that having a beater bike at each end of your commute has its advantages.

The last time I looked, they had repaired* the damage I reported where people had cut the fence in two different places to get in, but with no further improvements.

*by repaired, I mean it looks like they soldered the fence back, and it looked like I could break it off again without even using any tools.
