Another. Drunk. Driver.

That's why you never catch me downtown during party times.
Interesting to me was that in the comments to that article, one reader complained of being hit & run'd by a pedicab.

I have seen it too one night several years ago at 6th and Lamar. Drunk driver around midnight ran red light going west on 6th crashed into another car and popped the curb almost ramming the building on the southwest corner.

I wish the cop manning the barricade had had an inclination and safe opportunity to shoot to kill.

From what I've been reading, the dead weren't both on the moped -- instead, one was on the moped, and the other was a cyclist (i.e. on his bike when killed) visiting from the Netherlands.
edit: his name was Steven Craenmehr, and he was 35 and the creative director for Massive Music.

Yeah, I saw that. Oh, the irony.
In other news, the driver was previously convicted of DWI and also charged with hit-and-run. (Newsday) Why the hell aren't we taking these people's licenses away? Yeah, I know, the response is always that they'll just drive anyway, illegally, so that means we throw up our hands and do nothing? I say, DWI or hit-and-run should mean that you give up your license for a non-trivial period of time, measured in years -- in addition to whatever other penalties the system may impose.

Rashad Owens' remains in jail on a $3 million bond. His court date has been pushed back to April 30 June 3 July 8 2/23/15. I read somewhere that the judge hopes to hear the case by November (2015).
While two people died at the scene, another two eventually died at the hospital (one much later—March 27; De'Andre Tatum, age 18). So I'm editing the title of this topic to reflect that there were four deaths.
I see in the Community Impact newspaper that came out prior to SXSW, there was an ad showing an icon of each of a ped, cyclist, and car, reading:
Drive with Care. Walk and bike aware. The Downtown Austin Alliance wants your downtown SXSW experience to be the best it can be. Whether you are walking, cycling, or driving...please be careful and watch out for others.
Well, there were sure prescient, I'll give them that.

Owens was sentenced to life in prison. The jury was probably conflicted, since he killed a cyclist, which would push them in the direction of minimal penalties, but he also killed three "normal" people (non-cyclists), too. In the end, maybe the fact that he was black and killed white people sealed his fate.
