AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) -- A car hit a cyclist heading to work at the state prison in Kyle Monday morning, leaving him with life-threatening head injuries.
Hays County Sheriff's Department Corrections officer Fernando Amaya, 44, underwent surgery for his injuries after he was hit by a vehicle just after 7 a.m. when it veered onto the shoulder of FM 150.
Kyle city spokesman Jerry Hendrix said the vehicle swerved onto the shoulder to avoid hitting an eastbound car in front of it that had braked. Hendrix said Amaya was traveling opposite of traffic on the shoulder, going west.
Amaya was taken to University Medical Center at Brackenridge.
The Kyle Police Department is still investigating the incident, and no charges have been filed.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to contact officer Tracey Vrana with the Kyle Police Department at (512) 268-3232.

Looks like the cyclist's condition has been improved to `critical'. (1/2 :) ) (well, it's better than `killed', anyways.)
