im sorry if it came off as a scam. it most definatley is not.i cant figure out how to put pictures up. i will gladly text or email pictures to anyone.

(1) Scammers commonly claim to be about to deploy to explain why they're offering their merchandise at a low rate. Maybe you're really deploying, but by saying you are, you automatically make your ad look scammy.

(2) You spelled out part of your phone number -- like someone with a history of having to get around filters.

(3) You didn't give your name. (Maybe it's "Nate S.", but that's just a guess, since you didn't say it explicitly.)

(4) You didn't post pictures. A free craigslist ad would give you a place to upload them, and to link to. Maybe you've been banned from craigslist?

Maybe your offer is truly legitimate, and if so, I hope you sell your bike. Though when your ad looks suspicious, you'll get fewer inquiries.

This is standard operating procedure on Craigslist these days. I would not interpret this as evidence of a scam.

And I posted my phone number spelling the last four digits because when I don't, I get spam text messages to my phone.

To those unfamiliar with that, it does look fishy, though. Google it and you'll find that many people have that feeling about spelled-out phone numbers. ABC News advises people to "be leery of" spelled-out phone numbers: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/technology/ … t-to-do-2/

I would expect that kind of fear mongering from ABC News - they go on to say that spelled out phone numbers "hides the ad" which isn't true at all. It prevents phone number harvesting and doesn't let someone search a 10 digit phone number on the site - that's it.

I'm recalling now where I've seen the spelled-out phone numbers before -- various phishing email messages. That's why I associated it with something fishy.

Craigslist is full of people spelling out phone numbers. I suspect it's a cargo-cult thing -- it sounds good, but doesn't really accomplish much. Given an hour, I could write a program to decode 95% of them in a Craigslist post, so I have to assume the spammers could do that too -- and they'd probably put in more than an hour to get some of that last 5%.

Maybe spammers do spell out their numbers ... but legitimate people do it now too.

And when they post something to CL and their text message spam doesn't increase massively -- they think it worked. But I've posted my number on Craiglist recently and my text message spam didn't increase either.

(Side note: you know what did increase my text message spam? Driving through El Paso. It started as we drove by the border -- I think my phone connected to a tower in Mexico and that triggered something.)
