Electric and hybrid cars are so quiet at low speeds that pedestrians often don't notice them, so now proposed legislation would require such vehicles to make some artificial noise so that peds know they're coming.
One of the historical problems with cars is the noise pollution they make in our cities. Hybrid and electric cars started taking a dent out of that problem, but that proved too dangerous, and so now, quite ironically, legislation will likely add back the noise that was removed.
