A couple nights ago I picked up a staple in one of my tires. Nice industrial-size staple that turned a five minute ride home into a 25 minute ride home (I don't have a pump on this bike yet).
I've got a spare tube, but I don't have a spare tire. Since it's a 20" tire, I'm going to have to special order it. I'm wondering, though, if I need to replace it. What can I do to repair the tire and ensure that the holes don't turn into a place for the tube to explode?

I generally do not replace a tire just for a puncture. If the tire is sliced or excessively worn, I replace it then. Pump up the tire to normal pressure, and if the tube is not starting to bulge through, the tire is probably still OK.
