http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40740145/ns/us_news-life/

woman driver hits a pothole which sends a chunk of asphalt through the windshield of another car, killing its passenger.  woman sez:

"I wasn't doing anything wrong. I wasn't texting. I wasn't talking on the phone. I wasn't speeding. I wasn't doing anything but driving."

you weren't doing anything wrong?  you were driving!

Well, of course I'm sympathetic to this point of view.  There are lots of problems with driving, including:

(1) Air pollution, catastrophic oil spills, and climate change
(2) Wars for oil, kill untold numbers of innocents
(3) Carnage on the roads

I'm not suggesting that we can all go 100% car-free, but the point is, given the incredible toll that driving takes on our society, we should:

(a) try to minimize our driving as much as possible, and
(b) recognize that if we really need to drive, then driving is a necessary _evil_.

But we don't do that.  Instead, our attitude is, "I wasn't doing anything wrong.  I was just driving."

"Just" driving.  Right.
