LAB Public Art Dedication Ceremony & Ride - Sat., June 12th 8:30am-12n

LAB Public Art Dedication Ceremony
Art Ride on Lance Armstrong Bikeway — Public Art Dedication Ceremony

Join League of Bicycling Voters and City of Austin Art In Public Places in celebrating the dedication of the public art commissioned for the Lance Armstrong Bikeway (LAB), Saturday, June 12, 2010, at 10:30 am. The LAB is an east-west, six-mile bike route through Austin. The work is the creation of artist collective NextProject (Leah Davis, Robert Gay and Jack Sanders) who will be on hand to discuss the work and guide us on a tour of the bikeway.

An early-bird art ride will kick off the event at 8:30 am, as part of the "Scout-A-Route" ride series from the Austin Cycling Association, beginning at Mellow Johnny's at 400 Nueces Street. The ride will include stops at various art installations along the route, with commentary and insights from the artist collective NextProject (Leah Davis, Robert Gay and Jack Sanders).

At 10:30 am, the ride will make a stop at the MoPac Bridge along Veterans Drive for a formal dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. After the ceremony, join us for a family-friendly ride to complete the 2 miles back to Mellow Johnny's, staring at approximately 11:00 am after the ceremony. The entire ride is open to the public, but helmets are required. The route consists of on-street and off-street marked paths, from Veterans Drive on the west to Shady Lane on the east.

The public art, commissioned by the City of Austin Art in Public Places program, consists of a series of modular pieces to serve as the LAB's artistic elements: bright yellow powder-coated steel free-standing, solar-powered signs, benches and two large-scale sculptural "tunnels" as well as a paint gradient applied to the roadway in several locations. The artwork lends a "graphic identity" to the bikeway, serves as wayfinding devices, and provides rest stop amenities along the route. The 27 pieces are installed at various locations throughout the bikeway and provide a balance of aesthetic and functional items for users.
