No Bike racks at Performance Bike South

Why would a chain store sign a lease that would not allow bike racks out in front of their store? Probably because the south store has rock-bottom lease payments. That's what I get for not going to a local bike shop. I promptly went back to Bicycle Sport Shop, and they were closed, at 5pm, on a Sunday. I don't get it. I guess I'm just assuming (again) that everyone should be on my schedule.:-)

They let you take your bikes INSIDE the store at performance which is better than a bike rack.

Indeed, that's the best. I did walk my bike in. I do the same at University and BSS. I just thought it was rather ironic.

The store on Anderson Lane doesn't have racks anywhere close, either. The last time I was there I locked up to a railing. I hadn't realized that I could just walk my bike in - I'll have to remember that!

Strip malls in general seem to lack racks.

Yes, strip malls in general are badly designed.

Re: No Bike racks at Performance Bike South

Bike racks have been required by city ordinance since about the mid-1980's.  (See below.)

If you want them to have bike racks, ask the business politely for them.  Wait.  If there is no action, then remind them that they are in violation of the city code.  Wait.  If there is no action, then contact the city to report it.

§ 25-6-477  BICYCLE PARKING.

     (A)     In this section, "bicycle" includes a motorized bicycle.

     (B)     An off-street parking facility for bicycles as prescribed in Appendix A (Tables Of Off-Street Parking And Loading Requirements) must be provided for each use on a site.

     (C)     A required bicycle space must comply with the requirements of the Transportation Criteria Manual.

     (D)     The location of an off-street bicycle parking facility must:

          (1)     be as convenient to building entrances as the motor vehicle parking facility; and

          (2)     not interfere with pedestrian traffic.

     (E)     A provision of this article that is applicable to off-street motor vehicle parking also applies to bicycle parking, unless the provision conflicts with this section.

     (F)     The city manager may waive a requirement relating to the number or type of bicycle spaces or approve an alternate method of compliance after considering the characteristics of the use, the site, and the surrounding area.  A waiver may not reduce the number of required bicycle spaces to less than two.

Re: No Bike racks at Performance Bike South

I sent a message to Performance bike stores by email requesting that they speak with the strip mall owners and the City of Austin. I included the ordinance in my email for emphasis. Thanks!

Wouldn't their invitation to let you park inside qualify as an `off-street parking facility' ?

It struck me as strange when I couldn't find a parking rack too, but I was just fine parking it inside when they invited me to do so.

Re: No Bike racks at Performance Bike South

I wish everyone would let me take my bike in the store, I feel much safer.  I even tried taking the bike in HEB once when shopping, hardly any stares, I was suprised.

Next time I will take my bungee cord and bungee a basket from the store on the bike :)

Yes, I think it's no more dangerous than a shopping cart! It would be very funny to bring an Xtracycle into HEB, full panniers and everything!

That's called a bike-thru.  ;)

Creekside Lounge on 7th St. downtown has bike racks in its back patio.  I know that they used to let bicyclists park their bikes out back there, but I haven't been by in a while when it wasn't really crowded with people inside.

I take my folder in lots of places.  HEB, liquor store, optometrist office, patio restaurants, and of course work.  Just ride up to the door fold it and roll it under my desk.  Was one of the reasons I got a folder...  Oh and of course the LBS!

Re: No Bike racks at Performance Bike South

Our neighborhood got the local Randall's to put in racks, so if you see a place that needs then, definitely ask.
