Pedestrian struck, killed on Burnet Road, police say

By Mark Lisheron | Wednesday, October 14, 2009, 10:45 AM

An elderly man killed this morning when he was hit by a car while trying to cross Burnet Road at Richcreek Road in North Austin has been identified this afternoon at William Boykin, 83, police said.

Boykin, who was using a walker, was crossing Burnet when the light turned green, police Lt. Brian Gruetzner said. He was hit by a red Honda Civic that had been approaching the intersection when the light changed, Gruetzner said. Boykin was dragged about 100 feet from the intersection, he said.

It was dark at the time of the crash, and the driver has told police he did not see the man until the crash, Gruetzner said. No charges are expected to be charged, police said.

Police were also investigating a fatal crash that happened about 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of East Seventh Street and Chicon in East Austin, police said.

Two vehicles collided in the intersection, police said, and both drivers were taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge, where one later died.
