Allegedly intoxicated man strikes bicyclist, drives off

By Patrick George | Monday, February 23, 2009, 04:20 PM

A man is in custody at the Travis County Jail after police said he struck a bicyclist with his car while intoxicated and drove away.

Rudy Calderon, 31, has been charged with failure to stop and render aid, public intoxication and driving while intoxicated in connection with an incident that happened at 9 p.m. Saturday.

Injured was 19-year-old cyclist Cory Nowell, who was injured near East Riverside Drive and Royal Crest Drive , according to Calderon's arrest affidavit.

Nowell told officers that he was riding his bike on Royal Crest Drive when he was struck by a maroon Ford Taurus. Nowell said he was lying on the ground and was injured. Calderon moved the bike from underneath the car and drove off, the affidavit said.

Nowell identified Calderon as the driver who hit him, the affidavit said.
