Man accused of injuring cyclist in hit-and-run, police say

By Patrick George | Monday, February 9, 2009, 04:51 PM

A bicyclist was injured Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a driver who attempted to flee the scene of the wreck, according to an arrest affidavit.

The affidavit says a cyclist was riding eastbound on Seventh and Medina streets around 2:30 p.m. Saturday when a car turned in front of him. The bicyclist braked to avoid the car but his bike was caught on the car, the affidavit said. He was dragged several feet, the affidavit said.

Police said the driver, 28-year-old Hermino Herrera, then ran a stop sign and fled the scene, according to the affidavit. Herrera later rolled his vehicle over in a wreck in the 3600 block of south Interstate 35, the affidavit said. He was not seriously injured.

The bicyclist suffered injuries to his knee and abdomen. Herrera was charged with failure to stop and render aid, a third degree felony.
