New York City may require bike storage space in residences

For some motorists, the idea of spending even a cent of public money on bike lanes in Portland is just another sign of our dear city going to Hades in a bike basket. Well, imagine their road rage when confronted with this: A new regulation mandating that all new residential buildings and commercial towers include storage space for bicycles.

No, Portland isn't talking about it (at least as far as we know) but the idea is gaining traction in New York City. Today, city planners introduced the ambitious proposal, which would create the nation's most rigorous bicycle-parking rules, according to the New York Post.

Under the plan, apartment buildings would have to provide one indoor bike-parking space for every two apartments. Office towers would have to create one bike space for every 7,500 square feet of space - about 100 to 200 bikes for a typical Manhattan office tower.

And guess what? So far, the idea actually has the tacit support of developers. Of course, bicyclists in New York City have long complained about the shortage of parking. I'm not so sure Portland bikers can say the same thing.

I wonder if Austin downtown resident bicyclists are having any trouble storing their bicycles for daily use?
