According to several people on Facebook, Donnie Prado is the cyclist killed in Georgetown on Sunday.

Here is a gofundme to help pay for his funeral and help his wife.

Ouch.

Four in one month?!?!  Now, Donnie Prado was killed outside of Austin city limits, so he wouldn't be included in Austin statistics, but ... usually, Austin averages 1-2 cyclist deaths per year, but three in one month, this is madness.

In another thread, we were talking about how traffic is down but fatalities (motorist fatalities) are up.  The suspected culprit is people driving faster because there are fewer cars on the road, and less enforcement.  Maybe that's taking its toll on cyclists, too.

On the other hand, when Austin's population started exploding some years ago, I thought that all the extra cars on the road might make it *safer* for cyclists, because with all the congestion, traffic would move slower.  Well, that didn't happen.  (The safety thing didn't happen; the congestion/traffic moving slower happened, but didn't lead to safer conditions for cyclists.)

Donnie Prado was my friend.  Our daughters went to school together and Donnie and I used to ride bikes together.  He was a great person, a great dad, a great husband and a devout Christian.  He treated everyone with kind and gentle respect. I am shocked, saddened and mostly angry.  I hope they find the piece of organic matter who ran from the vehicle and left my friend dead on the road and remove it from society.  Donnie deserved better.
