Re: Enforcement of 3 foot law by APD leads to citations

According to Bike Austin, the Austin Police Department will start enforcing the three-foot passing rule for vulnerable road users in November, using bike-mounted devices that measure passing distance.  Bike Austin members donated the funds to purchase the devices.

http://kxan.com/2016/10/14/make-sure-yo … -watching/

I remember seeing an article recently announcing the vehicle proximity measurement devices.  Glad to see them already being put ot good use.

Here is a summary of violations handed out so far:
Breakdown of Safe Passing
    Operations hours: 18
Motorist VRUO Citations (egregious violations): 21 (typically under 30″ passing distance0
    Motorist VRUO Warnings: 28
Motorist Violations (other): 22 (distracted driving, etc.)
    Bicyclist Citations: 6
    Bicyclist Warnings: 2

Thanks for posting this!

I wonder how many citations have to be issued before driver behavior is affected?  I wonder the same thing about the no-handheld-device ordinance.  With that one they've given out tons of tickets.
