Episcopol Bishop gets 7 years for DWI killing of cyclist in MD, 10/15

It's a sad state of affairs when even clergy members are willing to hit-and-run kill us.  The driver did receive a non-trivial sentence, though.  I'd be surprised if she got that kind of sentence here in Austin, though.

Skimming through the article comments, I'm sort of amazed nobody is complaining about bikes being on roads.  On any bike injury/death article on local news here there is so much rage against people on bikes.

Maybe that's because they're not a bike-friendly city like Austin.

Speaking of road rage, beginning 1 Jan TX law will allow the open carry of handguns (if licensed). Has anyone considered carrying while out on the bike? Any thoughts/comments on the pro or cons or otherwise? I haven't really had any problems lately that I can remember but you never know. Hard to imagine throwing a beer can at someone who is obviosly packing heat.

Open carry on a bike?  Never even considered it.  My main worry would be losing control of a weapon in case of a accident/fall and personally I doubt it will make much of a deterrent to people who already feel that bikes have no right to the road.  All they will see is the bike and get so red in the face that the gun won't be seen.  If one was to try and use it as a deterrent to being harassed, open carrying a replica (within what the law allows) would probably work just as well.

A better deterrent is the "Polite" cycling jackets that closely resemble "Police" jackets.  I've read anecdotal stories these work well in the UK.  Unfortunately the APD bike units don't have very distinctive uniforms so not sure how well this would work around here.
