Ora Houston on bicycle riding

It seems some of our new City Council members have a rather strange idea of bicycle riding safety.

Re: Ora Houston on bicycle riding

Riding on the sidewalk is as safe or unsafe as you choose to make it.  It is NOT inherently unsafe, but to ride safely on most sidewalks, you have to act as a pedestrian at crosswalks etc., look for everything and yield to everything, so it makes for a pretty slow and inconvenient ride.

I agree, she needs to learn more about bicycling.

All sidewalks are not created equal though. When I cross town lake on I35, I use the sidewalks, which are in fact much much safer than the frontage rds with cars going 60mph and no shoulder.

Re: Ora Houston on bicycle riding

Ms Houston is meeting with our neighborhood assoc in July, I'll be bringing up this and other issues. By then she'll have some time on the council to learn more about bicycle commuting but I just want to confirm she understands there are thousands of bicycle commuters in her district.
