Welcome to the 2013 VeloTexas Bicycle Safety Intersection Design Workshop
http://velotexas.com/index.htm

Wed, Nov 20th
London's Public Transit and Cycle Superhighway
6:00-8:00 pm
St. David's Church; 301 E 8th St

Thurs, Nov 21st
2013 VeloTexas Bicycle Safety Intersection Design Workshop
9am-4pm
Thompson Conference Center
UT Campus
2405 Robert Deadman Dr

The 2013 VeloTexas should be an exciting hands-on design experience about bicycle safety through intersections.

The City of Austin has identified the intersections to be included in the design workshop and we will have guests from the Transport of London cycling program assisting us developing design alternatives for these intersections. Aerial photos of the intersections can be found at the VeloTexas FaceBook page 2013 VeloTexas City of Austin Intersections.

Transport of London Cycling Program

Helen Adlington and Stephen Mcilwaine from the Transport of London will be our guests during the workshop. Helen and Stephen will be sharing with us experiences gained in the implementation of London's Cycle Superhighways. Looking ahead to the workshop, Stephen has sent us some before and after pictures of some intersections that cross their cycle superhighways, these can be found at Transport of London Before and After Cycle Superhighways.

About The Bicycle Safety Intersection Design Workshop

Participants should expect to learn technical elements considered in the design of intersections for cyclists safety. We will have various presentations and an overview of the NATCO Urban Bikeway Design Guide followed by the design workshop.

Participants will be assigned to small design groups and each group will then be challenged with the design of bicycle paths through their assigned intersection. By the end of the workshop we expect to have general guidelines for implementing bicycle paths through intersections.

We identify some guidelines for designing bicycle paths through intersections, then what is next? The objective is to apply to the Federal Highway Administration for "experimentation." A request for experimentation is the process by which an idea for a new traffic control device or application becomes standard.

About VeloTexas
With the purpose to encourage the use of bicycles in a safer street environment, VeloTexas is a technical conference designed to gather communities, bicyclists, planners, engineers, researchers, public agencies, and those interested in improving safety of bicyclists. VeloTexas has the objective to encourage the use of bicycles on streets by promoting:

Better understanding of laws and regulations,
Improvement of infrastructure planning and design,
Efficient operation and maintenance of bicycle routes, and
Safer practices in the use of bicycles and use of motor vehicles.
Research
Development of safer street environments requires better understanding of: bicyclists, interaction of bicyclists with other motor vehicle drivers, infrastructure needs, and rule and regulations. VeloTexas aims to develop tools that will assist in understanding these elements and provide strategies that will make streets safer for bicyclists.

Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.

~ Albert Einstein, letter to his son Eduard, 1930
