When I was in NYC last year, I saw posters and flowers at an intersection at Union Square for a woman killed by a hit-and-run driver.
The driver was recently acquitted. Not even probation. Nothing.
He'd made a right turn across a crosswalk, where pedestrians had a green signal. He claimed he didn't know he'd hit anyone. (How many times have we heard that one?) Seems like he should have at least been found guilty of *failing to yield* to a crosswalk. I mean, we do have a rather large piece of evidence for that one: a dead body.
