Howdy Y'all, after thinking about the subject of critical mass for a while now (and many attempts). I think that it's time that this town starts doing a monthly freak bike party and ride. something awesome, not too crazy. with the right organization and promotion, we could have a lot of fun with this. Feedback would be appreciated. I don't have the resources to start this on my own.

happy monday,
Thomas

Critical Mass is a monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to take back the streets.
We meet on the last Friday of every month (holiday or not, rain or shine) at 6:00 p.m. on the UT West Mall where it meets Guadalupe (between 22nd & 23rd Streets).

All levels of cyclists are encouraged to come out. bmx to road, mountain bikes to tall bikes, no one is left out!

Who runs Critical Mass?
Nobody. There are no leaders. Anybody can ride, and whoever happens to be in the front of the mass usually determines the route. Riders are responsible for their own actions/behavior

see y'all at the fountain.

Critical Mass doesn't have the same rep that it used to. I mean how much damage can you possibly do with 15 people.... know what I mean? hahaha.

#6 Re: Roadway hazards » Angry Gang of Young Cyclists Takes over Northbound Lamar » 2013-03-31 10:47:20

Thats a picture of me and a few of my buds. I can tell you right now that wasn't us, critical mass often takes all the lanes as a demonstration, but there's no way that was us if people were "heckling drivers" we only had about 14 people and we were all very courteous. I sure as hell didn't go around flipping people off. we weren't even on lamar at all.

It has been called to attention far too many times and nothing to be done about it, so.
The Dirty Austin Cyclists will be assembling every month or every two weeks to clean and revive the green parts of our city. waller creek is considerably FOUL. Shoal Creek is bad as well. Help us clean up the city and ride our cycles where one might not normally ride because they think it may be "too dirty" or maybe even "too dangerous" and make our presence well known, though completely non-violently and friendly. These routes that we will take will change austin cycling.
These creeks that we clean up, will bring in new life.
The people that we will be with will be amazing.

what to bring!

trash bags
water
good shoes
gloves (if you really want)
your bike!

Hope to see you come out and help.
- Thomas

meeting @ Shipe Park
4400 Avenue G, Austin, TX 78751
meet up at noon thirty, leave around 1:00 p.m.

What route do you take?

It's random. Sometimes busy streets, sometimes peaceful streets. Whoever's in front usually determines where we go.

What's the purpose?

Everyone has their own reasons for riding on Critical Mass. Some see it as a protest of cars, others just like to go on a fun bike ride. After being menaced every day by cars, many of us find it exhilirating to ride with 50-100 other cyclists in a fun, supportive atmosphere. Critical Mass doesn't have any specific agenda or goals. While most of us would like to see an end to the car culture, Critical Mass doesn't have a specific plan to hasten that goal; it's just a bike ride.

What should I bring to a ride?

Water. You'll get thirsty.
Lights. From October through March, it gets dark early.

when "http://bicycleaustin.info/events/" is typed into my address bar, one of the first things that I see is a CM ad. it advertises that Mass is still rowdy and that the starting time is 5:00 p.m. when it is now 6:00 p.m.
you should fix both of these things.
  sincerely,
a concerned cyclist.

Come ride with us on a fine March day and see some of my personal favorite spots in Austin. Don't forget to wear some green. gotta have tha green.
ROUTE (not exact but pretty damn close)

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/171436492

first stop- lake austin boat ramp off of enfield
second stop-parking garage on 8th street and guadelupe street.
third stop-(possibly secret beach)
fourth stop-we might have one.
Ending at central market for beer food and whatever else you might want.
this is about a 16 mile ride so nothin to big.
see you there!

The DAC to not drop cyclists, so all levels of cyclists are encouraged to come see what we're all about.
red lights are very good points to mass up. that being said, we don't run too many red lights/break traffic laws unless seen fit, and logical.

The Dirty Austin Cyclists were founded in October of 2012, but were officially considered a legitimate group in November of 2012. The founding members include (but are not limited to)-Kevin McFarland, Thomas LePori, and Truman Anderson. We are a small, yet growing collective of local cyclists who aren't involved with anything but our own local rides and the monthly rides. and the way we ride our bikes is unique, to say the least. We do not condone violence, we do not condone people being assholes for no reason. We are who we are, and that's pretty much it.

Doug, that's why I said the monthly full moon rides. I know that the annual is older.

Michael, I don't really care, come ride your bicycle with us, or don't. I was just promoting a ride.
good day sir.

Critical Mass is the oldest regular mass bicycle ride in Austin, TX. older than the TNSR and older than the monthly Full moon cruises. RIDE. YOUR. BIKE.

You know, probably not. I'll have to edit your original text to fit the modern day CM. I use your words from over a decade ago because I want Critical Mass to be the fun ride that it used to be. not the lawless "riot" of a ride that it became. It's absolutely tragic that such a great ride has such a bad reputation. In Austin, Texas of all places.... where we're supposed to have the most kick ass bicycling community ever. However, all I can see is small separate "cliques". It's just like high school. I'm sorry, but last I checked, I hadn't been in high school for years. Quite ridiculous how much drama bikes can bring to a city... more like the people who ride those bikes per say.

Who runs Critical Mass?

Nobody. There are no leaders. Anybody can ride, and whoever happens to be in the front of the mass usually determines the route. Riders are free to follow all traffic laws or break all the laws as they see fit, with each rider being responsible for his/her own actions. Riders can also try to convince fellow riders that they should take up all the lanes of traffic or that they *shouldn't* take up all the lanes of traffic.

What route do you take?

It's random. Sometimes busy streets, sometimes peaceful streets. Whoever's in front usually determines where we go. Often someone suggests a special destination, such as the site where a cyclist got hit by a car, a bank that doesn't allow cyclists to use the drive-thru, In the summer months, the ride usually ends at a swimming hole, like Barton Springs, the spillway, or Sunken Gardens.

Friends. The more the merrier!
