Such articles cite speeding and other violations for this trend, but I'd be interested in stats describing the changing character of the vehicles on our roads. Slate had an article the other day discussing the rise in "megatrucks" and "monster SUVs":

"The drivers who just love the feeling of being way up off the ground, of having a front end that intimidates other cars, of being big? Just remember this. You’ve made a choice, and that choice tells your community that you are absolutely, totally, 100 percent comfortable with killing someone. How will you feel the day you actually do?"
I was chatting with an employee at the Trek shop on Research a few days ago, who told me Trek was keeping the Guadalupe service-only shop open and that it was going to be something of a new experience/experiment for them.
My understanding of the matter is that SCB did not *technically* have bike lanes since parking was allowed. Official bike lanes do not allow parking. You may recall the city accidentally painted bike lane markings at one point and then had to go back and obscure them with black paint.
Why do I read the comments on news articles?... Majority of kxan comments essentially saying cyclists deserve it for riding on roads. Then it devolved even further into trump land saying we need to build the wall (I guess cuz the driver had a hispanic name?)
Is there a plan to connect the Shoal Creek trail all the way to the lake? For as long as I can remember there have been washed out sections around 5th or so. I suppose it's not a huge deal to head back up on the street next to Book People and return to the trail on this newly paved 3rd Street path, but this has long seemed a forgotten project.
Getting a little OT here, but I had a wreck this week commuting in to work and slammed my (aerodynamic) helmeted head on the concrete hard enough to briefly lose consciousness. If I hadn't been wearing the helmet, which I've often considered, I don't believe for a minute that I would have ridden away with nothing more than the broken thumb I ended up with.
Just sayin...
*Very* well put, dougmc. I was going to write up a response, but now I'm just going to give a thumbs-up on your post. I find that 2-way bike lane to be frightening.
