#1 Re: Justice Issues / Collisions » TRAFFIC LAWS for running red light » 2012-10-29 17:16:33

It does not make any sense that you would have to stop, but then this is the law we are talking about, and they often don't care if it makes any sense.

#2 Re: Justice Issues / Collisions » 13-year-old cyclist Pete Valdez struck from behind and killed » 2012-08-23 22:28:41

I looked it up just to see where he was and it does not look like a good road to be riding on at 10:30pm, but it also does not look like the city provided any alternatives for bicycle transportation there.

#3 Re: Justice Issues / Collisions » At-fault 85-y.o. driver kills 55-y.o. cyclist Verter Ginestra » 2012-04-30 11:44:28

The only way the roads will ever get safer is if people think about driving correctly.  Driving a car is a dangerous act, more dangerous than shooting a gun.  People who cannot shoot guns responsibly are not allowed to shoot them anymore, people who drive cars irresponsibly should not be allowed to drive them anymore.  The implementation of this is up for debate, but the underlying principle must be applied, or people will continue to use these weapons to kill people.  I am a firm believer that 80% of collisions (Not accidents, because most collisions are actually preventable) are caused by 20% of the drivers.  Get those 20% off the road and you will reduce the death toll both for pedestrians and cyclists, but also motorists by 80 people per day at least.  And maybe with 20% of the drivers unable to drive, society will finally take public transportation seriously and create ways for these people to get around safely and quickly.

#4 Re: Justice Issues / Collisions » Driver gets 25 years for killing ped at CapMetro bus stop » 2012-03-04 11:47:57

I am a huge fan of license revocation.  And stiffer penalties for driving without a license.  I firmly believe that 80% of the collisions on the road are caused by 20% of the drivers.  And if we could just get them off the road, the roads would be safer for all.  Note I said collisions, not accidents.  When you drive recklessly and hit a pedestrian, cyclist, or another car, it is not something I would call an accident.

I wonder if the charges would have been as severe if he had not upset a police officer.

#6 Re: Cars / Gas / Energy » Go car-free and save $1.5 million » 2011-06-12 12:45:57

FYI I did the math on more realistic numbers for my situation, and it looks like I would save about $100/mo if I ditched the car entirely.  However I must qualify that I work from home, and do not drive very often.  If I chose to finance a car every time my last one was paid for, it would be more like $400/mo in savings.

-- edit, I assumed I would car share or take a taxi or rent a car.  If I went ENTIRELY bicycle, and never used a car under any circumstances I would obviously save more.

#7 Re: Cars / Gas / Energy » Go car-free and save $1.5 million » 2011-06-10 10:11:23

I do not think you can get a cab for $6 from anywhere to anywhere, it is usually $20-50

#8 Re: Other » Advocacy towards people who only remember "stupid" cyclists » 2011-05-03 16:39:19

I agree with John, most people in general are courteous and considerate, but that 20% of bad ones can really ruin your day.

#9 Re: Other » Advocacy towards people who only remember "stupid" cyclists » 2011-05-03 09:45:37

You can have the most carefully crafted bullet proof explanation in the world, and some people just won't listen.  Also, these people don't just get mad at cyclists for being in the way.  I get people honking at me and zooming around me all the time when I drive a car, because I keep a 1 car per 10mph following distance.   (That is 7 car lengths on the highway)  It matters not that I am going the exact same speed as the car in front of me.  Or they get mad at me because I refuse to accelerate into a red light, etc etc.  Some people drive like morons, and the only real solution is to enact legislation to separate them from their driving privileges.  Do that enough times and they will be the cycling advocates, because it will be their only source of transportation.

I strongly believe that 20% of the drivers cause 80% of the accidents, and if we could just prevent that 20% from driving AT ALL, the road would be safer for children, cyclists, other vehicles and animals.

As for what to say.  When someone says it is not safe to cycle on the road, I would say: "If you drive in such a way that you cannot stop if something slower is in front of you, you are driving badly, and should not be allowed to continue."

On the road, cars are as dangerous or more dangerous than an ak-47.  Bicycles are about as dangerous as a paintball gun.  With increased power comes increased responsibility and liability.

#10 Re: Commuting/Routes » Commuting Slaughter/Manchaca area » 2009-02-12 18:17:42

I have gone this way before and it is fairly peaceful.  You cross 35 at slaughter and avoid ben white completely.

after looking at the map it looks like a shortcut through smith school rd would shorten the trip but I have never tried that.

#12 Re: Commuting/Routes » Buda to North Austin - Drive, Park, then Ride? » 2008-08-15 22:59:23

It depends on what mileage you want.  I would probably park at south park meadows, then take first to dittmar then wander over to bannister, then follow route 31 I believe to downtown, then wander through austin up to 183, cross 183 and wander through to parmer.

I know I am leaving a lot out, I think you would want to explore a bit and learn the streets before you try it.

If you want to get closer, Bicycle Sport Shop on lamar has never towed me, and I have parked there a few times to ride places.  You could probably even talk to the manager there, I suspect they would want to help a commuter get started.

I need a clearer picture and I removed the aero bars.  Now that I figured out how to get the pictures off my phone, I may take them more often :)

#14 Re: Bike Lanes / Facilities » Do we need to increase safety or not? » 2008-08-09 08:45:06

I am willing to drop the word perfectly.

The road is very safe, go ride on one when there are no cars on it and you will see, it only becomes unsafe when the first motor vehicle comes along.

#15 Re: Justice Issues / Collisions » NYC Cops arresting several cyclists, lying, violating rights » 2008-08-08 08:47:20

APD is much better than this in my opnion.  They may not be perfect, but they do not make up charges as they go.   (In my experience).

#16 Re: Bike Lanes / Facilities » Do we need to increase safety or not? » 2008-08-08 08:42:39

The roads are perfectly safe, its the cars that are not safe.

#18 Re: Commuting/Routes » New google maps feature » 2008-08-04 09:41:34

Hopefully it will improve soon, I asked it to walk me a few places and it told me to walk on the highway.  But it is better than the "Avoid highway" button.

or on your mandatory helmet.  (You need the helmet so we can read your license).

Apparently cars do indeed run red lights the way that bicycles do.

#20 Re: Justice Issues / Collisions » Looking for Witnesses » 2008-07-23 08:07:32

The woman who was involved with that man is either a relative or a friend of my mother in law.  He is still in jail I believe.

The sad part is I think if it had been anyone but lance he would not have gotten in so much trouble for the incident on the road.

#21 Re: Other » Us vs Them » 2008-07-22 15:13:36

Ok, the trying to kill you on purpose, I'll give you 1%, but it is more than 1% that get within inches of me when passing because they are trying to tell me I shouldn't be on the road.  And this is when I ride in the middle of the lane.

Oh and the ones who tailgate me when I am going 25mph, if I hit a stick I am roadkill.

Oh and the ones who wait till the LAST minute to pass me, when THEY are being tailgated, and the tailgater behind them almost splats me.

I could go on and on, the problem is not only malice, but endangering me out of ignorance as well.

#22 Re: Justice Issues / Collisions » Money Talks » 2008-07-22 15:09:26

You mean like the Livestrong Challenge?  Or the other many bicycle events we have had here in Austin?

Maybe we need something that is not so tied to lycra and racers.  Something involving cycling through town and shutting down a bunch of roads in town.

(Like critical mass but with an escort and legal).

#23 Re: Justice Issues / Collisions » Looking for Witnesses » 2008-07-22 08:27:10

I wish you the best in your search, may he go to jail for a long long time.  And may a large man named bubba call him "honey".

I will say 99%+ of drivers are in fact courteous.  Before moving to Austin in 1998 I lived in Florida where people (generally old ladies from New York and rednecks in large pickups) would go out of their way to run me off the road and yell at me for being on "their" road.  So in comparison Austin is paradise.

However there are aggressive, jerk drivers out there and we have a legal system that defends them a whole lot more than it defends us.

I would put it more at 90% lately, a lot of those California and Florida people keep moving to Austin.

I think you hit the nail on the head.  Most drivers are kind and courteous, but when we find that murderer on 4 wheels and try to get him off the road, the law enforcement takes his side almost EVERY time.  And it leaves them out there to do it over and over again.  If someone assaulted me in a bar and I and called the police, the man would be arrested, if he knocks me off my bike and drives off laughing, the police just look at me like I am wasting their time.

It is not "us vs them" it is injustice from our legal system.

See, in the UK they take this crap seriously, and attitudes about speeding and laws are changing.

Watch this video and see if your attitude about speeding is ever the same again.

Oh, warning, there is blood etc etc (Just like the real world).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb5q_YYpxB0

I have not found any directly related to road rage, but if we had an attitude to "show it like it is" here in America, people might just start taking it seriously.
