I've followed commuterman's route.  If you are on mtb or hybrid bikes, you can take a back path to avoid most of pleasant valley after the bridge and riverside.

the 101 bus now goes up to tech ridge in the mornings and evenings.  I'd suggest picking it or the 1M/1L up at Justin
