Here are some important reminders about the Tour de Fat (www.newbelgium.com/tour-de-fat):

- It's coming up this Saturday!  It will be at Fiesta Gardens (around the Southern tip of Comal St.), and the schedule is as follows:

9:00 a.m. -  Bike Parade Registration
10:00 a.m. -  Bike Parade
11:00 a.m. -  Performances Begin
1:30 p.m. -  "Carpocalypse Now" – Funeral procession for the car belonging to the Car-for-Bike Trade volunteer
3:30 p.m. -  Car-for-Bike Trade Celebration
4:00 p.m. -  Curtain Closes

- All your purchases (including beer) will benefit local bike non-profits Austin Cycling Association, Yellow Bike Project, and Austin Ridge Riders.  Bring a little spending cash, and don't feel guilty for treating yourself to some goodies.  Keep in mind, though: this is a bike-fest with beer, not a beer-fest with bikes!

- Trade your car for a bike (http://www.newbelgium.com/videos#107):  One volunteer will sign over their car title and receive a hand-built Black Sheep (http://www.blacksheepbikes.com/) commuter bike in exchange. The volunteer is chosen after submitting a video or essay describing their desire to live car-free for a year.  For more information, log on to http://www.newbelgium.com/tour-de-fat.  "The car-for-bike swap is what gives Tour de Fat its deeper meaning as people make a life-changing commitment," said New Belgium SpokesPerson Bryan Simpson. "Anyone is welcome to be a swapper - whether you're an avid cyclist or just starting to rekindle your love for the bike.  We can't wait to meet more good people willing to forgo four wheels for two."  We are still seeking a car-for-bike swapper in Austin!

- Tune up your party bike.  Throw on a silly costume.

- Be a reserve volunteer to cover in case of no-shows.  Email dahlberg.pete@gmail.com with your phone number and availability to get on the list.  At the event, please show appreciation for the volunteers who make it all possible.

Thanks,

Pete

After learning that our arrangement with the city will prevent us from taking out conventional loans, Yellow Bike is kicking off a micro-loan program to raise the rest of our projected construction costs.  We're asking anyone who supports YBP's mission and who has some cash in the bank to loan it out to YBP and literally build community in the form of the new YBP headquarters.  We'll repay your loan within 5 years, and, at 3% interest, give you a better deal than you can get in your savings account at the bank .  We need these funds to begin construction, possibly as soon as next month.  Put your money to a good use, then get it back - plus interest!

To learn more, visit www.austinyellowbike.org/microloan.htm where you can find details about the program, view a draft contract, and a webform where you can sign up to participate.  you'll also find past and current balance sheets that demonstrate our ability to repay these loans.  A Yellow Bike representative will contact you and arrange the signing of the contract and exchange of payment.  To keep our books as simple as possible, we're limiting these loans to a minimum of $1000.  If you'd like to help out, but can't swing a large enough loan at the moment, you can always make a smaller donation at www.austinyellowbike.org.  Thanks for your consideration, and please feel free to spread the word!

This Thursday, May 21st, Austin City Council will hold a public hearing on the 2009 update to Austin's Bicycle Master Plan.  The update outlines a long-term strategy for making cycling a safer and more viable mode of transportation in Austin.  We need to be there, because those who are against it most certainly will.  Here's what you can do:

Show up to the hearing.
The public hearings section of Thursday's council meeting begins at 6:00pm.  Go to City Hall (301 W. 2nd st.), pass through security, and head to the southwest corner of the main lobby.  The Bike Plan hearing is fourth on the agenda, and will definitely not happen before 6pm.  If you're afraind you might miss it, come out anyway.
Group rides to City Hall leave from:
-Bouldin Creek Coffee House (1501 S. 1st) at 5:30 pm
-Treasure City Thrift (E. 12th & Salina) at 5:30 pm
-Epoch Coffee (221 W. North Loop) at 5:15 pm

If you can't make it,
go to City Hall any time between now and the hearing.  Go through security and ask to use one of the computer kiosks in the main lobby.  You'll need the update's item number, which is 61 PH.  Locate the item and sign up for or against it.

Also on Thursday night, begining at 9:00 PM, Austin's Yellow Bike Project will celebrate it's 12th birthday at Red 7 (611 7th st.).  Musical entertainment will be provided by Austin's own Shearwater, as well as The Theater Fire, Buttercup, and the YBP Gospel Choir.  A percentage of proceeds will go to YBP's new building fund, so come on out for a guilt-free good time!
