Dear All,

I am community ambassador for OpenStreetMap and am hosting in Austin on Sunday January 25th for OpenStreetMap. OpenStreetMap is a global, open source mapping project. It can be considered a sort of wikipedia for maps.  There are over 80,000 participants in OpenStreetMap worldwide, and we are working to increase participation here in the US. You can learn more about the project here: wiki.openstreetmap.org

During the event, participants use GPS units to collect information to put on the map (cycle / hiking trails, natural features, museums, and many other points-of-interest). They then upload the information to our online map. This information can be enhanced and corrected by the community, and the data can be utilized in many unique ways. Currently the map is being used to create bike maps, route maps, on GPS units and in many other capacities. This is all being provided and accomplished free of charge.

Cyclists have played a major role in the expansion of OpenStreetMap, and we have developed a unique map tool that helps to highlight cycle routes.  You can see a cycle map created from our map data here: opencyclemap.org.

Event Details:
Sunday January 25th, 11am - 3pm
Austin Java, 1608 Barton Springs Rd Austin, TX 78704
