Interesting tact that the city tried, but it might cost them more on the end. Who knows this could lead to education efforts within the city regarding as to what are the roles and responsibilities for each party for incidents like this.

Okay looks like in another article it indicated he pled down to a misdemeanor charge. No indication of what punishment was handed out.
This was the owner of Jumpolin that was arrested in 2014 for allegedly buying stolen bicycles. Does anyone know what happened to these charges? And if they were dropped why?
Obviously this is a separate issue from the demolition of Jumpolin which has a civil case pending.

I intend to visit Austin from November 2nd to 9th and would like some recommendations on where to stay, either in town or where the riding is best. I currently ride about 200 miles a week and am looking to do the same during my stay. Some suggestions for routes would also help. I am familiar with mapmyride and will use that as a source as well. My south Florida ride pace is about 20 mph.(What's a hill??? ). All of my riding is solo or small group and I am safety conscious and Extremely compliant with traffic laws....stop at stop signs, signal turns, etc. etc. I appreciate any suggestions as to rides and lodging locations. Do you have data on crash locations/causes to go along with it. At that resolution, I can't tell where a given dot is located (what street, what block). Or, and I wouldn't be surprised, is there a way to zoom in that I can't figure out without coaching?

Not sure I understand the reason for not charging the driver who was making the turn. He didn't say the cyclist was speeding and of course traveling in the should is legal for cyclists.

This is a good event to refer to when people tell you that cyclists are never ticketed. If motorists feel that there is an equal application of the law they have less ways to rationalize cyclists not being on the road system.
When I first heard about the pilot program for this I thought of it as a nice, but unnecessary, amenity. The last few train rides, however, have made me rethink this as quite often all of the bike hangers in the train are taken. I'm also thinking that having a beater bike at each end of your commute has its advantages.
I not clear on the entire chain of events, but I can understand some of the frustration from the cop's point of view. I have a very loud bell on my bicycle and some trail users on the wrong part of the path still cannot hear it due to their voluntary hearing impairment via headphones. Are they also not hearing ambulances/police using sirens coming their way?
It is not feasible for me to get off my bike and politely tap each one of them on the shoulder to inform them that I'll be passing on the left. I waiting for the day one of the does not hear me and makes a sudden, last second movement in my direction. Won't be pretty for either party.
I saw them setting up a new location just south of the Dog and Duck pub yesterday. Good spot! Now they need some East Austin ones.
They should take it down. All we need is every church in Austin putting their signs on shoulders, sidewalks and wide outer lanes. Some people in this country have a hard time grasping the idea of "public property" and that it should not *ordinarily* be used for commercial purposes. Yeah, don't let them fool you with the increased MPGs argument. Efficiency has gone up but is still only about 20% above what it was six years ago. 20% added to 18.4 cents still isn't much. Problem is so many legislators have taken the no tax pledge that they have to resort to tolls, fees, etc. to make up the difference. Problem is with raising the vehicle registration fees is that it is not tied to how many miles are driven - your grandma who drives 3,000 miles a year gets hit with the same increase as the 40,000 mile super commuter from Marble Falls. Not fair at all.

I found that Red Falcon's experience pretty much matched my own. In addition to the bars I did remove my pedals, as Amtrak calls for, but probably does not check. I did have a small problem in that at my destination I found a blown front tube. It had a long tear in the tube so I'm thinking it was jostled around a bit too much. Seeing how they load the bikes on the trailer with the bike/box perpendicular to the ground I'm not surprised. I put only my helmet in the box along with the bike. They transferred the bike in San Antonio both times without incident. I was able to fold and reuse the bike coming back saving me $15. The boxes are bigger than the ones for new bikes found in shops which would have required further disassembly.
Definitely a must to check which stations have baggage service in advance. Surprisingly stations like Oklahoma City do not have this.

It may be hard to take my bike with me this time as I will be in Phoenix (from Maricopa) for some time and then Tucson for at least a day. Unless there is a way to leave the box at each station perhaps. It's also interesting that not all stops let you on with a bike. I'm assuming they let you disembark with bike at your station so why not the reverse. I don't mind schlepping the bike myself but that probably doesn't fit into their scheme of things.
I was hoping there were some racks on board but I'm guessing not on these particular trains:

I think it's great that Amtrak doesn't overcharge for bikes but still more options/accommodations would be nice.

Looks like only select trains allow the bike on without it being disassembled and boxed.
