Al Bastidas with Please Be Kind to Cyclists is working hard to get justice on this one, as well as all the other cyclist fatalities and injuries.
Perhaps contacting PBKC would help get your voice heard and affect more change.

Memorial ride for Justin Murphy

Date: This Wednesday, March 7 2012

Time: 5:00 to 7:00 pm

Location: Bicycle Sport Shop Research Blvd. Location.

Specifics:  This memorial ride is dedicated to Justin Murphy, a person who used his bicycle as a means of transportation and was killed while walking his bike. Justin was killed on January 23 2012, on the service road of 183 north and McNeil.

The pupose of this memorial is to honor his life and to pay respect to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Murphy.  We will gather at the parking lot of Bicycle Sport Shop and we wil ride our bikes heading north for about two miles to the location of the crash; where we will erect a ghost bike memorial.

We will gather to honor the life of a member of our community, a son, a brother, a friend and a neighbor, not just a cyclist.

Courteous Mass is a monthly bike ride that meets at 5:30pm at the Pfluger Bridge on the 2nd Friday of every month.
We ride to celebrate cycling.
We also ride to raise awareness of cyclists' right to the road.
We encourage riders to respect the right of way.
We encourage a festive atmosphere. We want to put smiles on as many faces as we possibly can. We diligently try to avoid creating frowns.
It's Friday!

#5 Re: Commuting/Routes » Breakthrough for commuters who live between 290/71 in Oak Hill » 2010-09-14 09:23:45

Oh you turn on Woodcreek.  Take Woodcreek to right on 1 Oak Rd. to right on Brush Country Rd.  Brush Country becomes Latta after going under MoPac.  Then turn left on Islander and take Bike Route #82.

#6 Re: Commuting/Routes » Breakthrough for commuters who live between 290/71 in Oak Hill » 2010-09-13 10:05:50

If you turn south at Latta, there's a very pleasant route to Emerald Forest.  On the Austin Bicycle Map, it's Route #82 and Route #31.
There's also a way to do it via Route #43.  Take #82 to West Gate, cross William Cannon, right on Berkeley, left Blarwood, right Amur, left Stone Pass, cross Independence, go through gate to Buffalo Pass, left Jones, right Packsaddle Pass, right Redd, to Banister.  This route is sketchy at Jones, but a pleasant route otherwise.
Ride on,
Chuck

#7 Re: Commuting/Routes » Route from Austin to SM » 2010-08-10 17:37:47

Here's most of what I'm talking about.
http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-st … 7191443852

Old Black Colony is good for Austin to SM
Cole Springs is good for SM to Austin

2770 from Buda to 1626 is heavliy trafficked and very sketchy.

The other way is only a little longer, but definitely worth it.

#8 Re: Commuting/Routes » Route from Austin to SM » 2010-08-10 17:28:03

Old SA to Loop 4
to Ranch Rd 967
to Cole Springs Rd
to Old Black Colony
to 1626
to FM 2770
becomes Old Stagecoach Rd
become Hays County 136
to CR 140/Post Rd

Old SA and Loop 4 are a little sketchy, but not terrible.
Cole Springs and Black Colony are  little rough, but almost no traffic
1626 and 2770 have wide shoulders
Old Stagecoach/CR 136 has really smooth pavement. Light traffic and respectful drivers.  That road gets a lot of cycle traffic.
Post Rd is a little rough.  There's a bike lane once you get close to San Marcos.
It's a pretty nice route.

This just got even sweeter.  There's a chance my apartment complex will pay me a $5k or $10k reward for catching the thief.  I seriously doubt they'll pay, but it's a definite possibility.  :D

From email received at 11:30pm:
"We got your bike!

Call me tomorrow morning and I will get it back to you.

Detective Bailey"

#11 Re: Justice Issues / Collisions » Stolen Bike? » 2010-08-04 11:31:17

Turns out it is a 54cm.  I had a friend call and ask about it.  She set up a meeting and got their address.
I have a case number for the break-in and the police have the serial number of the bike.  I called the police, once I had an address.  Turns out the guy that lives there has a warrant for his arrest for burglary.  The detective said he would come along to look at the bike.  I should have more info after 1:30.  I'm pretty sure it's my bike.

My bike was stolen from my apartment recently, so I've been watching craigslist to see if it shows up.
That post matches my bike description.
I called the guy.  First question he asks, "Where do you live?"  When I ask what size, "59 inch."
My bike was a 54cm so it's not mine.
Would the police go check out that bike on my suspicion of it being stolen?

"Just picked this bike up (wink, wink) and really only needed it one time so am not going to use it. Don't have a camera but found this pic that is the same model and there is another ad on here that describes it pretty well too (wink wink). It's ready to ride!"

That seems to be about what you're looking for.  Not sure on the size, but the price, style, and quality are good.

#16 Re: Traffic Laws » Tickets to ride: more citations » 2010-02-19 14:42:21

Remember the KVUE story on cyclists running the stop sign on Shoal Creek?
I stopped at that intersection last weekend for 5 or 10 minutes.
I saw 1 or 2 cars come to a complete stop.  I'd guess maybe 40 cars went by.
I saw 1 cyclist come to a complete stop.  I'd guess 15 cyclists went by.

There have been a few beefs about the ride this year.  Nothing too serious, just thoughts.
Does anyone have any input about the ride or rides in general?

My buddy wears his Ipod when he rides solo.  He got sideswiped a couple of days ago.  I told him he prolly wouldn't have gotten hit if he didn't have the Ipod.
Any opinions on riding the streets with headphones?
I'm pretty sure he's gonna get a mirror now, but won't stop rocking the headphones.

I'm unsure of what year this bike is, but I'd assume it's pre-02 since it has a rigid fork. Would be a great bike for a small woman or child. It's in excellent shape, stored indoors, low miles, has a brand new seat, and a fresh tune-up. $150 OBO
It's been replaced with an 08 Trek SU 1.0 and needs to find a new home.

Shouldn't parking in any bike lane be illegal since you must cross a solid white line to get there?

#24 Re: Rides and Events » Tour de France TV viewing » 2008-07-15 11:57:46

Is anywhere in town showing the live tour coverage.  I'd really like to watch l'alpe-d'huez on the 23rd.  I'm thinking Katz is my best option.
