Welcome to Austin !
And, I cannot believe the callousness and carelessness of drivers, around my own children, in our neighborhood. Problem is, I see it far too often, with too much at stake, not to...
Glad to read that Caden is more or less ok.

This full Moon appeared when wolves howled in hunger outside the villages. It is also known as the Old Moon. To some Native American tribes, this was the Snow Moon, but most applied that name to the next full Moon, in February.
But us? We ride!
Join us at the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge Wednesday night, January 11th, 2017 at 11:59pm, and we ride out at about 12:30am!
The schedule for upcoming full moon rides can be found at http://cycling.frenzied.us/full-moon-rides.
As always, ride at your own risk, having lights on your bike at night is a good idea and it's always prudent to have at least enough equipment to change a flat.

Thanks to everyone that helped. TNSR was a blast. And thanks to Timaeus for putting together such an awesome route. With the exception of the mass u-turn it went well.

Social Cycling Austin rides AS traffic and NOT AGAINST it. We stop at red lights, yield the right of way and let cars pass as best we can. We don't block intersections. We are nice to both our fellow riders and the other traffic on the road. LISTEN TO the volunteers helping to lead the ride. They are some nice folks and have you best interest in mind. If you have any questions about the rules, I suggest you check here:http://bicycleaustin.info/laws/austin.html
REMINDER: The goal has always been to create a safe environment for all riders, but we cannot control, nor do we desire to, every rider's behavior. We promote personal responsibility, and it is each rider's responsibility to take care of themselves, and if they choose to ride with us, then they accept those risks inherent in riding a bicycle with a large group of other people riding bicycles.

It's funny you mention freedom. That's America's slogan, but when you think about it, one of the biggest freedoms is freedom of movement, and that's exactly what American kids lack but which they enjoy in places like Japan...Here in the "freedom"-land of America, our house became a virtual island for the kids. Stranger danger, unsafe streets, and no trains to speak of. ....
I have been saying very much the exact same thing for years....
Wake up people, AISD, COA, Texas, United States !
The tall bike rider committed big on that ride. Our local social cycling tall bike wheelman, Blake, should see this vid.
Thanks for posting.
This has really been on my mind recently. We know Jared Ficklin and his twin brother, Joey, very well. They are also very involved with Makers Fair. I have been thinking about gondolas with new interest since our trip to Breckenridge, Co this Thanksgiving. Huge possibility for bicycles, transit, freedom of mobility in ATX.

UPS Begins Delivering Packages via E-Trike in Portland
Deliveries by e-trike: Now happening in Portland. Photo: Bike Portland
By Angie Schmitt Dec 8, 2016
"Delivery trucks are terrible for city streets, polluting the air, blocking bike lanes, endangering pedestrians and cyclists. But cities need the goods they carry.
One way around the problem of big trucks is to divide deliveries into smaller loads, carried with smaller vehicles. Jonathan Maus at Bike Portland reports on an encouraging development on that front: UPS is piloting the use of an electric-assist trike for deliveries. There were already independent companies using trikes for deliveries in Portland, and the UPS move suggests larger companies may want to get in on the action..."
This is good news for Portland and for the future in many US cities. As the article says these are common in Europe so it's good to see them coming to the US.
An interesting bit is the cost savings from avoiding parking tickets. Perhaps a bit of encouragement to report those who violate bike lanes and maybe change their behavior more than just staying out of the bikeways.
In 2013 UPS was paying NYC over $4 million per year in parking tickets and Fedex nearly double that.
"Just in the first three months of this year, FedEx racked up $1.8 million in parking violations. A spokesman for UPS said the Atlanta-based delivery company was also paying the city more than $1 million a quarter for parking infractions...."
Parking tickets: All in the cost of doing business
A million here and a million there and pretty soon we're talking real money.
Interesting bit of UPS history:
UPS WAS FOUNDED BY TWO TEENAGERS WITH ONE BICYCLE AND $100 BORROWED FROM A FRIEND
June 29, 2010 Daven Hiskey
"Today I found out UPS was started by two teenagers with one bicycle and $100 borrowed from a friend.
The date was August 28, 1907 and the two kids were 18 year old Claude Ryan and 19 year old Jim Casey. The two had one bike between them and $100 (about $2400 today) borrowed from a friend to found the “American Messenger Company” in Seattle, Washington. The company was initially run in a hotel basement at Second Avenue and Main Street in Seattle...."

Very deserved for many reasons, MBJ. Advocacy. Alternate perspective, information, statistics made available to the community. Freedom of Information, Freedom of Speech, and Freedom of Mobility. Providing a protected space for us to gather and connect with our bicycle community in ATX.
We should all review this video as it helps us understand the contributions made by folks such as MBJ, Tommy Eden, Mike Librik, many others. Current heavy hitters also include Christopher Stanton/Ghisallo, Preston Tyree, Tommy Eden, and Tom Wald, to mention a few.

Trike'N Trike Neighborhoods
This venture comes out of the idea of ONEderment Neighborhood Empowerment to bring all people in the neighborhood together as one.
Trike Neighborhoods or TrikeN is a venture to bring a HUB, built around trikes and specialty beverages, to neighborhoods. A process we think of as neighboring.
Our vision is to provide a gathering space for local citizens to Learn | Share | Create and fund it through the assembly, sharing, rental, sale and repair of trikes/bikes as well as provide a space to gather over a specialty beverage and create art and maybe even grow some flowers or vegetables.
We are all in this together.
Indeed, agreed. Preston is a remarkable individual and one of our strongest advocates and allies.
Trikes are very cool. I rode a pedicab trike in Austin for more than 10 years. I was also amazed at the number of high end trikes and recumbent trikes I saw when I was working in Ohio where they have real bicycle transportation networks and community infrastructure. Many older folks and retired couples were regularly out and about on their trikes. All ages, all abilities networks benefit us all by making cycling more inviting and more accessible to our more vulnerable community members.
Thank you Preston Tyree and Ghisallo Foundation for making a difference in our local community !
I was at a meeting where the engineering/design firm and city staff presented this plan for 4th St. Facing fierce opposition from the Hilton and their valet parking service. This latest diagram/proposal seems to address their concerns with a cul-de-sac/turnaround that stays north of the train, pedestrian, and cycling facilities. Another interesting caveat is that they wanted to allow motor vehicle access through the so called pedestrian plaza during special events/times. Absolutely counter intuitive. It will be interesting to see the final plan as adopted. And it will still be a joke of a downtown central train station. Think about DC, NYC, San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, other US cities. Wow.
"Thinking south-side -- we'll check out some new infrastructure, and ride on it if that's feasible."

MORE ABOUT THE HELL YES! PROJECTS
The idea behind the Hell Yes Projects is to prove out The ABGB’s philosophy that beer has the power to make everything better. Sharing times with friends. A fresh, hot slice of pizza. Seeing a great band. Hell yes, beer makes all of these things better. But we also believe that beer has the power to make our entire community better. We believe we can harness beer’s innate goodness and put it into action improving our neighborhood and city and enriching the lives of lots of folks. So, Hell Yes to more bikes around our city. And Hell Yes to making kids happy at the holidays with the joy (and the responsibility) of a brand new bike.
