Someone wrote to the list yesterday about problems receiving
attachments and viewing the archives. I replied to it but the message
didn't make it to the list somehow. So here's the gist of what I said.
First of all, if you have a problem with the list, write to the
*administrator*, not to the whole list. (Yeah, I'm writing to the
whole list, but only to keep people from repeating the above mistake,
and also to share the answer to the question with everyone.)
The very front page of BicycleAustin.info has links to stuff about the
list, such as "Read the archives". If you click that there are
instructions for having your password emailed to you (which you'll need
in order to read the archives).
In any event, I don't think attachments make it into the archives.
Regarding the current debate over toll roads vs. free roads vs. no
roads.... I think there are good arguments on both sides. It can't be
denied that voters always enthusiastically approve more roads whenever
they're on the ballot, and I'm not sure enough has changed since the
last election just a few years ago to make the financial community or
the public suddenly unwilling to underwrite more roads. The opposition
to free roads might be successful for various reasons, but I kind of
feel like they're the underdogs. If I had to bet, I'd bet that in the
absence of tolls, we'll get free roads. But I'm glad I don't have to
bet, because this issue isn't so black and white to me.
It'll be interesting to look back on this thread a couple years from
now to see what's changed.
Incidentally, it slipped my mind (in all of 2004) that last year was
the 10th anniversary of this list. It started out in 1994 on a UT
server and was run by Polo Rodriguez, and actually was a support forum
for Critical Mass. From there it went to Topica, then absorbed Roger
Baker's austrans-bikes list, and then went to my server after I had
enough problems with Topica.
Anyone on this list now who was on it in '94, besides me and Fred?
