Bike folks:
I am forwarding my response to UT announcement of Speedway closure. If we want to discuss important projects, this is certainly one. The vacating of streets which were formerly Austin's most rode bike routes, is simply insane. Besides Speedway, planned accomodation of bicycles in our "new" Town Lake Park still falls short of replacing connectivity destroyed by the vacating of Bouldin Ave., and construction of Palmer Events center and adjacent parking garage.
Someday, somehow, I would like to see austin's "bicycle organizations" address these issues.

The closure of Speedway, and construction of a Speedway "pedestrian mall", will add further insult to injury UNLESS accommodation of bicycle traffic is incorporated into this project.
Though UT planners are to be lauded for their efforts in creating a more pedestrian oriented campus, accommodation of the many thousands of UT students and Austin residents who bike through campus can only be seen as complementary.
You must simply understand this: Bicycles are not the problem, they are indeed part of the solution. A speedway without through bicycle travel is an insult to those of us working toward a bicycle and pedestrian friendly city, and truly bizarre in this adopted hometown of 6 time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong.
Shame.
