BIKE: Bicycling in Phoenix/Scottsdale?

I am visiting my parents (extended Christmas) who live near the Phoenix/Scottsdale border.  Great weather now, Quite proper bike lane of 56th Street BUT no one uses it.

I have walked over 15 miles (to the store etc.) since I came here.  I have seen one bicyclist and NO OTHER PED (except a coupel of joggers this weekend).

Look in Yellow Pages online for bike shops and rentals.  There are several bike lanes about town, but it is an abnormal behavior (a cop car did a U-turn and a slow pass by me in my nonconformist but legal walking).
