I knew that Sears sealed up the west doors facing the HEB (by the women's
undies section), but I have always been able to enter at the door facing south
(by the women's clothing section) and have not had to walk all the way around
to the east side by the icky highway.

Were the south doors sealed as well? I have been there several times in '04 and
have been able to get in that way. It is a bit of a nuisance, but not as
obnoxious as what sully describes.
