BIKE: Austin Densities

This is true in many parts of Austin, including the are where I live 
near Slaughter and Manchaca.  However, like many areas in our city 
there are now many more houses here that when I moved here in 1969. 
On my street today there are now nine houses compared to two 35 years 
ago.

Some sections of Austin are very dense and getting more so, 
especially in the core with population densities of 17 K to 18 K per 
square mile.  Certainly, as Eric points out, we must be careful how 
we grow and how we infill.  Some cities have "from the neighborhood 
up" planning processes where the neighborhood is part of the plan 
from the beginning of any new infill project in their neighborhood. 
This is one answer to nimbyism, perhaps there are others.  We humans 
don't like change, but change is easier when we understand why we 
must change and we are part of the process.
