Pfluger friends:
See this weeks December 24 Austin Chronicle, page 18, to get an idea of staff-proposed "preferred alternative"
http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2004-12-24/pols_naked4.html
Such a center-arm Pfluger Bridge extension, connecting with Gables easement, and Bowie underpass, would also continue north off published Chronicle map as dedicated and separate two-way bike facility through the Market District to Henderson.
The staff-proposed "preferred alternative" would in fact meet the following goals which I stated in December-January Cycling News:
· secure Bowie St. alignment through proposed Gables project on Lumbermans Tract, facilitating a Bowie St. underpass
· build Bowie underpass in tandem with a bridge extension · incorporate Lance Armstrong Bikeway into Pfluger Bridge extension alignment between Cesar Chavez and 3rd St.
· signalized intersections at BOTH 5th and Bowie AND 6th and Bowie
· design and implement quality engineered transition/crossing connecting Bowie and 6th with Henderson, facilitating north and south-bound travel from Pfluger Bridge and Bowie underpass to 9th and Henderson
· create a bike-way to and through the Market District while also facilitating the north-south connectivity desired by seasoned bike commuters
Look at the staff-proposed "preferred alternative", and at least acknowledge that finally, planners/consultants/architect/engineers/developer have crafted a viable and unified solution. Only in a parallel dimension where pigs fly, would planners propose eliminating a dedicated left-turn light and two-and-a-half blocks of parking to make this solution possible!!!..., certainly not Austin, TX???
I would encourage you to learn more, and help guide the completion of the Pfluger Bridge, perhaps at long last.

Below is information on Austin Cycling Association sponsored informational program of January 9th.
=================================
Pfinish the Pfluger Bridge!
A program of the Austin Cycling Association
http://www.austincycling.org
When: Sunday January 9, 2005
Where: Bicycle Sport Shop at 517 S. Lamar (new location)
Time: 12 noon to 2 pm.
Austin's bicycling public is welcomed and encouraged to participate in selecting the design of the long-awaited Pfluger Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge extension.
During this time, there will be a presentation and evaluation of the current design options, a lunch break, and also a field-trip (weather permitting) to the nearby Pfluger Bridge to help place the options in perspective. Stuart Werbner will also provide an update from the December 15 meeting of the Pfluger Bridge Community Advisory Group, and attempt to answer any questions on the project.
Please visit Pfluger Bridge Extension Project website to get an excellent introduction and the latest information:
