Fellow Cycling Advocates:

I would like to bring you up to date on the status of the efforts to bring
traffic calming to Shoal Creek Blvd (SCB):

Last week (12/16), city council quickly approved 6-0 (with councilmember
McCracken off the dais) the staff-approved consensus plan. [Please refer to
item #39 of the 12/16/04 city council agenda on the COA website.]

A summary of the plan is that there will be 30+ 6' curb extensions combined
with 4' "bike/ped friendly" lanes on both sides of SCB from 38.5 St to
Foster Ln. The motor vehicle travel lane will be 10' wide. Areas where legal
and not having a curb extension will be available for on-street parking.
But, as I have pointed out numerous times, the current percentage of
on-street parking (excluding the immediate holiday season) is steady at
between 1-2%. I have seen little change on this from the turn of the
millenium.

Thus, there will effectively be a 10' bicycle lane on both sides of the road
in most areas, and it will be more difficult to speed and for motor vehicles
to pass other motor vehicles on the same side of the road.

As is often the case, this long-awaited, decisive and postive action by the
city council has triggered another scheduled public meeting. You are welcome
and invited to attend.

Please see below for details.
