I haven't contributed on here in a long time mostly because I don't want
to get involved in silly arguments that get rehashed over and over, but
what the heck, might as well add some more granola to the fire...

Let's apply the "but for" test to the statement below in a slightly
skewed, but valid way:

But for the fact that you were driving your car, you nearly wrecked it.
Had you been walking or riding a bike, you would have not nearly wrecked
your car.

End of story.
