Austin: 12,000 hit-and-runs per year!

Some stats from the following article about Austin:

June 2015:  1078 hit-and-runs, 23 arrests

July 1-23 (23 days):  781 hit-and-runs, 35 with injuries, 16 arrests

Typical month: 800-1200 hit-and-runs

Extrapolating from above, there are about 528 cases/year of Failure to Stop and Render Aid.

There are two ideas I hear frequently that come to mind when reading this:

  (1) Austin is a bike-friendly city!
  (2) Cyclists have to follow the law just like drivers do if they want respect.

Not surprising.  I wonder how we fare against other cities of similar size?  I also wonder if there is any location or time of day correlation?

This is wider than a cycling problem.  Probably not a bad idea to invest in dash cam for the car and helmet cams for motocycle/bike.

I wonder how many of those arrests are for the injury hit-and-runs and how many are for the just property damage ones.

I guess this is not the time to ask APD, what are we paying for?

And what to do about it?  Bad choices can be made as well as better ones:  http://www.cyclelicio.us/2015/one-probl … more-33917
