Austin Cycling Association (ACA), a nonprofit organization that serves the interests of Central Texas cyclists, invites bike riders to join them in Bike Month, a chance to promote cycling the single most energy efficient transportation that benefits your life and the communities.
Throughout the month several events and rides will take place such as the Shiner Ride, The Armadillo Hill Country Classic, and Bike to Work Day to highlight the convenience, and advantages of cycling.
Bike Month will begin Friday, May 1, 2009, with the Shiner Ride, where cyclists will begin their 100 mile ride through small towns and scenic byways on the way to the historic Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas. Rest Stops are located every 12-20 miles and will be stocked with food, drink and cheering volunteers to keep your energy high.
The Armadillo Hill Country Classic will be held Saturday, May 9, 2009, and allows cyclists to tour the Highland Lake and Hill Country area northwest of Austin with some of Central Texas most experienced bikers. Proceeds from the event provide free helmets, fittings and safety training classes for children.
Bike to Work Day, the best-known event during Bike Month, will be held Friday, May 15, 2009 from 7 a.m. – 9 a.m. where ACA teams up with breakfast station sponsors and volunteers to provide breakfast to cyclists who work to conserve energy by biking to work.
"Bike Month not only offers cyclists the opportunity to experience the best biking terrain in the Central Texas area, but it also allows ACA to partner with cyclists and volunteers to help promote ways to save money, better health and energy conservation," said Gilbert Martinez, vice-president of ACA. "ACA is energized by community volunteers and people interested in getting the word out about biking."
Bike Month is an event sponsored by Austin Cycling Association and The Austin Yellow Bike Project (YBP), a community supported 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing human-powered transportation for the people of Austin, running a community bike shop, and educating kids and adults in bike safety. ACA and YBP are pairing up to promote the benefits of people powered transportation as a way to limit the traffic congestion of a rapidly growing city.
Bike Month is a project that promotes cleaner air, land, and water, while encouraging people to meet their transportation needs through an active lifestyle and community participation. It also provides an inexpensive, healthy, and sustainable alternative to the reliance on motor vehicles.
