Bus travel in Japan is a lot different than it is the U.S. Here we've basically had just one national bus company, Greyhound. (Megabus has been expanding their service area recently, but their coverage is still limited.) But Japan has lots of them. More competition means lower prices and better service. Here's an example of how that manifests.
One company, Willer Express, offers a choice of luxury seating that doesn't cost that much more than a regular bus. I took an overnight bus with them a few times and it was very comfortable. If only we had that option in the U.S. It's a far cry from Greyhound.
