Lookin' forward to the fun, Austin's Yellow Bike Collective ======================================================================= Austin's Yellow Bike Project ---------------------------- Austin's Yellow Bike Project (YBP) released the city's first 24 community free yellow bikes on January 25, 1997. The yellow bikes are free for anyone to ride, but not to keep. The YBP has released over 350 yellow bikes which volunteers build in repair/maintenance workshops, during which coordinators facilitate free bike mechanics education. Workshops are held 3 nights during the week and on Saturdays. The YBP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, all volunteer organization. The Austin community supports us through donations of bikes, time, parts, money & other resources. The Project has had fortunate coverage by the media throughout the Austin area. We are involved in a collaborative effort with the City of Austin; we established & maintain a City Employee Bike Library in exchange for the use of a City owned shop facility. In addition to producing and distributing yellow bikes, we have established both a City Employee Bike Library & a Community Bike Library with stations at the YBP shop and local businesses. A collective formed to operate and maintain the Project. The collective is the working & decision making body for the YBP. Membership to the collective is attained through 24 volunteer hours per season (fall, winter . . .). Coordinators, voted on by the collective, focus on the day-to-day operation of the Project. The Representatives also voted in by the collective, plan long range goals. Representatives and Coordinators are chosen from within the collective. Teens and preteens have been involved in the Project to varying degrees over the years. Through an Earn-A-Bike program, our support of Kids on Bikes, establishment of an after school bike class at Pearce Middle School and generally working with kids living around the different shops we have maintained a strong connection to the youth in Austin. Austin's Yellow Bike Project continues to grow as a community based and supported organization. The Project has evolved from a small core group putting out yellow bikes to an organized collective running multiple programs throughout the city. We constantly strive to operate the YBP more effectively with the resources that are available. ======================================================================= (re)Cycled Bikes Conference January 21-24, 2000 Tentative Schedule (12-20-1999) ------------------------------- ### NOTE: THE SCHEDULE HAS CHANGED CONSIDERABLY.
