Town Hall Meeting at Wildflower Center

Subject: South MoPac and State Highway 45 South

Wednesday, May 11th at 6:30 pm

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

4801 La Crosse Avenue, Austin, Texas

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is hosting a town hall meeting next Wednesday, May 11th, on the future of South MoPac and State Highway 45 Southwest. The meeting will include presentations from TxDOT, CAMPO, and SOS Alliance. There will be a question and answer session where the public can ask questions about planned expansions of these two roadways, both of which are in the Barton Springs Recharge Zone.

The meeting will be from 6:30PM-9PM. It is open to the public and there is no admission charge. If you live in Southwest Austin or along the MoPac corridor, please let your neighbors know about this meeting. Current transportation plans call for expanding South MoPac into a full freeway (or possibly tollway) and for extending State Highway 45 South (possibly as a toll road) to connect South MoPac to Interstate 35. The town hall meeting will help interested citizens understand the timing, costs, and implications of these road plans.

Thanks to the Wildflower Center, SOS Alliance and Austin Metro Trails and Greenways, documents describing the proposed Southwest Greenbelt will be on display in the foyer of the Wildflower Center for this event. See Southwest Greenbelt web-site to see the results of an October 2004 charrette, and other information regarding this proposed trail/greenbelt stretching from Town Lake and Barton Springs to the Wildflower Center:

Previous message from SCB Transportation Project project manager Keri R. Burchard-Juarez:

>Dear Shoal Creek area residents:

>

>I want to thank all of you for contacting the City to provide your input

>regarding the Shoal Creek Blvd. Transportation Project. Be assured that

>City staff is hearing and acting upon your concerns. We are posting signs

>throughout the project area to warn drivers of the presence of the curb

>extensions. The signs will be up by March 18. Once these signs are in

>place and some of the curb extensions are complete, including landscaping

>and pavement reflectors, we will begin monitoring driver and cyclist

>response to the improvements. We will monitor for a period of

>approximately

>

>two weeks. The data gathered will allow staff to draw informed conclusions

>about the safety and effectiveness of the curb extensions. After the

>monitoring is complete, we will hold a public meeting to answer questions

>and gather input from citizens. Thus, City staff will not be speaking at

>the Allandale Neighborhood Association meeting on March 23. We feel it

>will be more productive to meet after we have firm data about the safety and

>effectiveness of the improvements. We are tentatively looking at

>scheduling the public meeting during the week of…, but the actual date and

>location will be forthcoming. Please feel free to contact me with any

>questions or concerns. Thanks again for your time and interest in your

>community.
