My preference, starting from 18th and San Antonio, would be
to get on Rio Grande and take it all the way up north of w 29th,
and then joggle over to West. Take West north up to 34th and turn
west, er, hang a left. Cross Lamar and go behind the hospital
to pick up the Shoal Creek Trail on the right. That trail will take
you through Seider's Spring park and right up to Shoal Creek Blvd
just north of 38th.
Speaking of this route, they're doing some sort of maintenance
on the south side of Seider's Spring, and there is a detour on the
trail. It's kind of nice that they went to the trouble to establish
a temporary trail as the detour route (I've seen where they just
block the trail, basically saying to users, "we're working here;
get lost"), but the temporary trail is some sort of mulch-like bark
and totally unrideable. It's a short walk, though -- not too bad.
The construction on SCB is slated to begin Feb 7th. No idea
what the impact to cyclists will be, nor how long it will take.
Hancock is a fine way to cross MoPac, as is the trail over to
Far West and Steck. If you use Hancock, I've found that E Hill Dr.
is a good link between Thorncliffe (with its short but steep hill) and
N Hills Dr, which you can then take all the way up to Mesa.
